Eating a rainbow of colourful fruit and vegetables provides many different vitamins and minerals. For example, many are naturally high in folic acid, vitamin C and potassium. Fruit and vegetables are also a good source of fibre.

Strawberries are particularly high in Vitamin C. This is the least stable of vitamins and is easily destroyed during cooking or food processing. Vitamin C is essential for collagen production, an important structural protein which strengthens bones and blood vessels and anchors teeth into gums. Vitamin C also helps the body to absorb iron an essential nutrient for healthy blood. A serving of fresh strawberries supplies over 100% of the RDA (Recommended Daily Amount) for Vitamin C.

Diet and lifestyle factors may contribute to the development of one third of all cancers. Increasing fruit and vegetable consumption is the second most important cancer prevention strategy, after reducing smoking.

Because of its antioxidant vitamins and its potassium content, eating fruit, including strawberries can lower your risk of heart disease and high blood pressure.

As well as vitamins and minerals, strawberries and fruits also contain complex plant components (called phytochemicals), including flavonoids and glucosinilates. Some of the vitamins and phytochemicals are also antioxidants, destroying free radicals in the body. These free radicals are known to have a role in causing cancer as well as other harmful effects.

Strawberries are naturally a low-fat, low-calorie food. So eating strawberries and other fruits instead of snacks that are high in fat and added sugars may help you achieve or keep to a healthy waist-line.

It takes up to 11 exposures to a new food before a child develops a liking for it. Don’t be dismayed if they don’t like strawberries or anything else the first, second or even eighth time they have tasted it. Over time keep offering and gently persist they taste even one.

Buying fresh strawberries, fruits or vegetables when they are in season means that eating 5 A Day is not only much better value, but tastier and more varied too.
